How can I make wigs at an in-person workshop?

Since the pandemic, our opportunities for holding public workshops have become more limited. As we are able, we will advertise large public workshops on our Facebook page, so make sure you’re following us for all the latest updates!

Local Chapter Leaders sometimes hold smaller public workshops near them based on their own availability. Click here to find out if there is a Magic Yarn Chapter Leader near you. You can email her directly to find out about any public workshops happening in your area.

No public workshops coming up? Get a group of friends together and let us come to you! If you live in a metro area with a Chapter Leader, small private workshops may be available for your office, club, youth group, or ladies’ night. The workshop itself is free, but your group will be asked to provide some of the materials used. Workshops generally take 2-3 hours and are designed for 5-20 people. Please reach out to your local Chapter Leader to discuss details.

Can I host my own Magic Yarn workshop?

We LOVE having groups volunteer for us! Hard-working groups of Magic Makers are the heartbeat of our organization — we literally couldn’t do it without you.

All volunteers from anywhere in the world are welcome to have their group cut and bundle “hair” yarn. These “yarn parties” are inexpensive to set up, easy to teach, and fun for volunteers from age 4 to 104. We use over 1,000 skeins of yarn per month, so we rely heavily on donations from yarn bundling workshops to keep the Magic moving. You can find out all the details about how to make your “yarn party” happen on our Craft at Home page.

What about holding a workshop on my own to make complete wigs, without a Magic Yarn leader?

Promising the families who receive our wigs that they are “play-proof” and machine washable means that we have extremely high standards for the construction and visual touches on every wig we distribute. The specific skill set required to know what small differences will allow a wig to stand the test of time is not something earned after making two or two dozen wigs. We do not accept wigs made by volunteers who have not been through the Approved Magic Maker process individually, unless the wigs were made at a workshop run by a Magic Yarn leader trained in quality control.

If you would like to begin the journey toward becoming a Chapter Leader who hosts their own workshops, the first step is becoming an Approved Crocheter. You can find out more details on our Make Wigs and Beanies page.

Will you put on a wig-making workshop for my group?

Local Magic Yarn Chapter Leaders may be available to run a small private workshop for your group. The workshop itself is free, but your group will be asked to provide some of the materials used. Workshops generally take 2-3 hours and are designed for 5-20 people. Find out if there is a Chapter near you here.

  • A note for groups in Utah: Our Utah Chapter Leader only hosts a limited number of private workshops per year. Our 2024 list is full, but you can reach out to her about joining the 2025 waitlist. Rather than making complete wigs, your group is always welcome to cut and bundle “hair” yarn instead — no Magic Yarn leader needed. Find all the details on our Craft at Home page.

I’m interested in sponsoring a large workshop (100+ volunteers). How do I find out more?

Large workshops require us to send Magic Yarn leadership from different parts of the country to your location. Sponsorship of a large workshop requires funding for all materials, event space for multiple days, and travel and lodging for leadership; pricing will vary based on your group’s needs, but generally begins in the $5,000 range. Our schedule for 2024 is full, but you can reach out to us at info@themagicyarnproject.com for details about opportunities in 2025 and beyond.

I'm not ready to run a full Chapter, but I have a group who wants to volunteer on a regular basis. What's our next step?

In pockets all over the country, dedicated groups of Magic Makers are part of the army of consistent volunteers who keep the wheels turning for Magic Yarn. These groups follow our crafting directions with precision, communicate on a regular basis with our leadership team, and serve regularly and often enough that we can depend on them to help meet our supply needs. They usually have a group leader who is an Approved Wig-Maker or has attended an in-person workshop with us before. These groups have access to extended volunteer opportunities not typically available to the public, like receiving finished beanies from us to attach “hair” to and send back.

If you are interested in special projects like these for your group, begin by holding a few different events making things from our Craft at Home page. Be sure that you include a printed Feedback Form with each of your submissions so we can track who we are receiving them from, and don’t miss out on our volunteers Facebook group to hear about our latest requests. Then reach out to your Shipping Coordinator to ask about special projects based on your group’s needs and abilities.

How do I start a Magic Yarn Chapter in my area?

Magic Yarn Chapter Leaders operate as local representatives for one city or metro area. CLs go through an extensive training process to be able to host workshops, train volunteers, solicit donations, manage inventory, run quality control and packaging, personally deliver wigs to local children and hospitals, and represent Magic Yarn to the media. Each CL is a long-term volunteer with Magic Yarn who “came up through the ranks” as a trained and approved crafter first. Most of our CLs had years of experience making beautiful wigs and beanies before applying to run their chapter. You can view the list of our current Chapters here.

If you would like to begin the journey toward becoming a Chapter Leader who hosts their own complete wig-making workshops, the first step is becoming an Approved Crocheter. You can find out more details on our Make Wigs and Beanies page.

I can’t crochet, but I’m super committed to becoming a Chapter Leader. Is there a path for me?

Chapters cannot function without local crocheters. If you have a relationship with one or more Approved Crocheters local to you who can consistently provide you with beanies, arrangements can be made for you to begin the Approved Wig-Maker process using beanies they give to you. Please reach out to Shelly or Katie to discuss details.Â
