A few pointers to help you make a perfectsized beanie:

● Beanie should measure 6.5-7 inches long (depending on the which Beanie Type you’re making), from crown to brim when laid flat (above photo). Depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet, you may need to add an extra few rows along the brim of the beanie to make it long enough.

● The stitches should be just loose enough to pass a size H crochet hook through (this is how we attach long strands of yarn for the “hair”) but tight enough to still hold shape well when yarn is attached.

● Please either try your beanie on a child’s head or on a styrofoam mannequin head measuring 21” in circumference (we have a link to buy one off Amazon on our website). We want to make sure that the beanie will not be too tight or short for a child’s head (which is not much smaller than an adult’s head). Many of our crocheters have found that they have had to add rows to the circle to make the hat wide enough and length to the brim to make it long enough. We want to ensure that these wigs will perfectly fit the little ones who receive them so please double check your beanie’s fit before mailing it to us.

● Please put your name, state, and city on a piece of paper and either slip it into the beanie or pin it to your work so that we can put your information on the greeting card that will be sent with the wig.

Beanies for full yarn wigs

We only use SOFT yarn for these beanies.  Keep in mind that not all yarns are created equal.  For example, “Red Heart with Love” yarn is thicker (worsted weight) and will probably take a J hook to create good stitch spacing and tension with the beanie (as per pattern).  “Caron Simply Soft yarn” is thinner and will probably require a smaller hook like an H or I to create a beanie with tight-enough stitches and tension.

Yarn: Red Heart with Love
Hook: 5.50 mm (I)
Gauge: 3 sts per inch / 2.75 rounds per inch

Black Large_0346201, Maroon 80fec6ab-6c35-49e2-a5eb-4a5b3e60b0ed, Blues 7d4d95af-9a69-4a9c-8b16-4a7d6c03e0bb red-heart-with-love-yarn-blue-hawaii-2 Medium_0284700, purple 0d47441c-d32b-4652-a629-01de00c8dd3e, fuchsia th-1, white Large_0346164 , and dark red dark red yarn yarns

(These beanies are for Elsa, Anna, Jasmine, and Captain Jack Sparrow “beanie style” wigs)

  • Soft yarns only
  • Half double crochet pattern may be used.  Make sure the stitching is tight, as we do not want them to appear “hole-y” and want the beanies to help keep girls’ heads warm. For those who crochet loosely, a single stitch may need to be used instead of a half-double.
  • Please try your beanie on a child or a foam mannequin head that can be purchased at JoAnn’s for $5.  Make sure that the brim is not too tight or loose so that the beanie will fit comfortably over a little one’s head. We want to make sure that our beanies will fit our girls’ heads comfortably and as perfectly as possible 🙂
  • The Snow Queen and Princess beanie style wigs (pictured above) allow for some creative styling in using different colors and we encourage only skilled crocheters to make these beanies.  These beanies remain bare with yarn attached to the bottom to create an illusion of braids flowing from underneath the beanie.  We attach crocheted flowers to the Snow Princess beanies and crocheted snowflakes to the Snow Queen beanies.
  • Beanie should measure 7 inches long, from crown to brim, when laid flat (see pic below).

6-10 years (fits 21″ circumference, 7″ height)
R1: 8 hdc in adjustable loop [8] R2: 2 hdc in each st around [16] R3: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in the next st) 8 x [24] R4: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts) 8x [32] R5: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts) 8x  [40] R6: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts) 8x [48] R7: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts) 8x [56] R8: 1 hdc in each st around [56] R9-18: repeat R8 [56] R19*: 1 sl st (loosely) in each st around, F/O [56] [callout1]

*You may choose to finish the beanie without the slip stitch at the bottom. The Magic Yarn Project will weave in an elastic band to ensure a good fit. Slip stitch or not, make sure your beanie is 7in long from crown to brim.

Please note: Anna Beanies should only be 6.5in from crown to brim. Bangs will be added to these wigs so the length can be shorter.
